Manhole Entry training

This course is geared to all personnel entering manhole(s) andor a confined space for installation, repair, maintenance andor any other service(s). This extensive course is designed to educate workers on the serious nature of manhole(s) and any confined space entries.


After this training you will know how to safely supervise confined spaces and how to act in an emergency situation.

Teaching material

The training consists of a theory section and practical lessons. The following topics are covered:

Part 1 | Theory

  • Basic concepts
  • Legislation (Working Conditions Act)
  • General safety and environmental regulations
  • Specific risks
  • Communication
  • Measures for working safely
  • Work permit
  • Alarm situation

Part 2 | Practice

  • Work permit and communications
  • Direction of escape
  • Environment and outside of confined space
  • Resources
  • Supervision
  • Access and presence control
  • Alarm situation
  • Leaving the area safely


The training takes 1 day (8 hours) and is concluded with an exam that meets the test of the SSVV Training Guide (SOG). With satisfactory results, the certificate “Working as a Manhole Guard” is obtained. The diploma is valid for 3 years.

Minimum requirements:

The student must at least be in possession of the VCA-Basis diploma. There is a minimum age of 18 years. This exam can only be taken in Dutch.
